The Birthday Gift (For Mom)

Many years ago I emerged from a womb filled with love
I was wanted and so adored, she says I was a happy little girl
Lying in my crib at night, or so she told me
A night owl looking at the stars and wondering at the universe
That came from her

I’ve always wondered at the world and everything within its realm
We’d talk for hours on the telephone
Parsing the human condition, curious as to why
Not always agreeing, but that was OK

I don’t remember being taught
But I know the good and decent way
That I try to live my life by
That came from her
And not some Sunday school teacher

I’ve made mistakes, she didn’t judge
She merely said “Let it go dear”
Don’t hold on and become bitter Let it go

CHORUS
She is gone
But I carry deep within me all she is
Suddenly I am her
A facial expression, a particular word
A thought or a feeling
She emerges from me as I did her
We are one
